Medizinscher Fortschritt erfordert eine enge Verzahnung von Wissenschaft und ärztlicher Kunst. Lungenerkrankungen nehmen weltweit zu. Die betroffenen Menschen leiden unter starker Luftnot und die Erkrankungen verkürzen die verbleibende Lebenszeit. Neue therapeutische Ansätze sind dringend notwendig. An vielen deutschen Universitäten ist die Pneumologie jedoch nicht vertreten, dies steht dem wissenschaftlichem Fortschritt und damit der Entwicklung neuer Therapieansätze entgegen. Um den Patienten gerecht zu werden stellen die KEM sich dieser Aufgabe und haben eine wissenschaftliche Abteilung für Pneumologie gegründet. Es werden laufend Studien im Bereich der Schlaf- und Beatmungsmedizin durchgeführt. Zum Teil erfolgen diese Untersuchungen gemeinsam mit weltweiten Partner und international tätigen Unternehmen, da nur so Fortschritte zum Wohl der Patienten erzielt werden können.
Hohe ethische Standards stellen die Basis jeder Wissenschaft dar. Die von uns durchgeführten Studien werden durch die Ethik-Kommission der Universität Witten Herdecke streng geprüft.
