The Department of Internal Medicine Oncology covers a wide range of adult cancers. Our specialties include tumors of the digestive tract, lung tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, tumors of unknown origin (CUP syndrome), and tumors of the urogenital tract.
Under the umbrella of the Oncology Center, close cooperation takes place between our specialist clinics and cancer centers certified by the German Cancer Society (DKG). Special services are available in geriatric oncology – the specialized care of elderly people with tumor diseases – as well as oncological palliative medicine – the qualified treatment of tumor- or therapy-related symptoms.
We take the wishes, personal preferences, and life situations of our patients into account and are in constant dialogue with one another to flexibly adapt treatments or therapy goals. Treatment using classic chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and so-called targeted tumor therapy is available on both an outpatient and inpatient basis. We adapt to every individual affected by illness.
The current guidelines of the German Society for Hematology and Oncology (DGHO) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) form the basis of our daily practice.
Range of Therapies

Interdisciplinary Tumor Conference
All treatments for tumor patients (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy) are discussed at our clinic within the framework of an interdisciplinary tumor conference.
This tumor board is attended by the directors and senior physicians from the departments of Surgery, Internal Medicine Oncology, Radiotherapy, Gastroenterology, X-ray Diagnostics, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology, Urology, Pulmonology, Senology, and Gynecology. This ensures that your treatment is determined by an interdisciplinary team of experts. Decisions regarding treatment and therapy are based on the latest diagnostic methods, treatment guidelines, and research results.
All therapy decisions are documented for each patient as an individual recommendation of the tumor conference and, at the request of the individual or their treating physician, can be made available outside of the Evang. Kliniken Essen-Mitte.
Day Clinic
Almost all modern treatments in internal medicine oncology can be performed on an outpatient basis. In our oncological day clinic, we treat and advise patients suffering from cancer. In the case of newly diagnosed tumors, we can usually offer an initial appointment within a few days to review findings and provide advice on further measures. If still required, necessary examinations or measures such as a port system can also be organized at short notice. If the findings are sufficient to make a therapy decision, the treatment options are discussed and planned in detail with those affected and their relatives. It is important to us to include the individual situation of the person in the treatment concept. Relatives are welcome to join the consultation sessions; prior registration is not required. We try to conduct important discussions individually in private rooms.
Second Opinion
We offer consultations for second opinions and professional advice. If necessary, findings are discussed across disciplines in the interdisciplinary tumor conference and a corresponding recommendation is made.
