Family Support Through Illness and Grief
Taking a heavy burden off small shoulders: This is the guiding principle behind a very special concept at our hospital—psychological and social-educational support and counseling for parents and children with a seriously ill or dying family member. The focus of this work is to enable children and their families to engage actively and consciously with this challenging and stressful life situation. Family support is available from the day of the initial diagnosis and, if necessary, beyond death.
Clinical trials
As a specialized center for the treatment of gynecologic cancers, it is particularly important to us to offer you new, promising therapies as early as possible. We place special emphasis on scientific studies that help improve established therapies or investigate new forms of treatment. In your own interest, and also in the interest of future patients, we therefore aim to offer you participation in a study whenever possible.
How can you benefit directly from participating in a study?
In many cases, modern, promising medications can only be administered as part of controlled studies before they are approved. In addition, there are studies showing that participation in a study can be beneficial regardless of this. Possible reasons include closer monitoring of therapy and the course of the disease, as well as the specialized training of study physicians. They often also have greater experience in treating these conditions, which can also provide an indirect benefit.
Because of the positive effects of clinical trials, our goal is to offer every patient treated at our hospital for cancer the opportunity to participate in a study. You can find a brief overview of the studies we offer under “Current Studies”. If you are receiving inpatient treatment with us, we will present study options to you as part of the treatment consultation. If you have not yet been treated by us and are interested in participating in a clinical trial, please contact our gynecologic oncology outpatient clinic. You will then receive an appointment in the oncology specialist consultation that applies to you.

AGO Study Group
The AGO Study Group (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Gynäkologische Onkologie) is a collaboration of hospitals in German-speaking countries and one of the world’s strongest study groups in gynecologic oncology. Nationwide, more than 150 medical institutions take part in studies run by this non-profit organization. All are very well connected and cooperate with international groups. The AGO Study Group aims to improve therapies and survival rates for women with malignant diseases of the female genital tract. At study centers such as the Evang. Kliniken Essen-Mitte, patients are given the opportunity to participate in therapy trials so they can receive the best possible treatment—opportunities with life-saving potential. Prof. Dr. Philipp Harter, Director of the Department of Gynecology & Gynecologic Oncology at Evang. Kliniken Essen-Mitte and spokesperson for the AGO Study Group, was awarded the prestigious Ernst Wertheim Prize 2025 for his contribution to the field of gynecologic oncology. Professor Harter’s commitment and scientific contributions are setting new standards in the specialty of gynecologic oncology.
